The Malvern Festival of Ideas is a wonderful event. We should have similar events all over the country. This would help give citizens the confidence to challenge what is going wrong and to establish a happier and more helpful country, that could in turn help the world to become more just and sustainable. This might seem a big claim but a feeling of hopelessness and consternation disempowers people and fear takes over. Crisis is this year’s theme. There are answers to all the crises we face but few people are convinced of this and therefore the necessary actions are not taken.

Malvern Festival of Ideas is a multidisciplinary festival taking place in Malvern, Worcestershire. It is a themed weekend of talks, discussion and activities for people of all ages and backgrounds. It builds on the success of the Malvern Science and Faith Weekends, which have expanded in scope since they commenced in 2012. In 2018, the theme was Conflict. For 2019, the theme is Crisis.
The 2019 Weekend
The theme for the 2019 Weekend is Crisis and themed sessions will explore this topic from different perspectives including Social and Political, Health and International perspectives. The speakers at the 2019 Malvern Festival of Ideas will address the topic of Crisis from their own standpoints, and the accompanying discussions and activities will allow participants to follow up their own interests within this overall theme.
An important part of the Weekend is the Art and Science Activity Day for children and young people. This year, it will have a strong mathematics theme for secondary-age children as well as activities for all ages.
Refreshments will be available at many of the venues. Buffet lunches must be booked in advance—see event descriptions.
Malvern Festival of Ideas is part of the charity EngageMalvern (registered charity no. 1175088), with the objects of community capacity building and the advancement of education for the public benefit in Malvern and surrounding areas.
Malvern Festival of Ideas began as
